popping..

Perhaps the most popular suspension bridge in the world is the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California. Not only known for its aesthetics but in the most unfortunate way has become one of the world’s most popular places to commit suicide. Yes, this bridge has its dark side and over a thousand lives have been taken by it. For 68 years, there’s been a debate to put or not to put a “safety net” in the bridge.

The deck is approximately 245 feet (75 m) above the water. After a fall of approximately four seconds, jumpers hit the water at some 86 miles per hour (138 km/h), which can be fatal. Some of those who survive the impact drown or die of hypothermia in the cold water. (Wiki)

Lethal Beauty, a seven-part series looking at the darker side of the Golden Gate Bridge reached an inescapable conclusion: A suicide barrier would prevent deaths. On October 10, 2008 the Golden Gate Bridge Board of Directors voted 14 to 1 to install a plastic-covered stainless-steel net below the bridge as a suicide deterrent. The net will extend six meters on either side of the bridge and is expected to cost $40–50 million to complete.

Sorry I never meant to touch on such a depressing subject but I couldn’t help not going that direction talking about the Golden Gate Bridge…

  1. that’s a magnificent shot of the golden gate bridge! it’s weird how people who want to commit suicide have the strength to drive or walk to the bridge and do the deed. :D

  9. Well, the place always looked challenging to me. Thankfully, I have a fear of heights, so jumping could be only a remote idea ;-)

  11. That is a stunning photo of the Golden Gate Bridge. I grew up in northern California and have been over that bridge a few times. I have photos, but I’d have to scan them first, so I didn’t use any. I have another bridge in Colorado I did use. Thanks for stopping by earlier and my hunt is finally up.

    Have a great weekend :)

  13. What a gorgeous shot of the Golden Gate Bridge! I saw a documentary about the suicide aspect of the bridge. It’s a sad part of the bridge’s story.

Sinigang For the Soul

This is both a mixed bag and a personal blog, not a food blog; although I may talk about food sometimes! :-) I am a Filipina Expat living in the United States. The pages here are random musings of love and hate, rants and raves and anything in between. Sinigang is a metaphor to signify all my favorites in life; all that interests me (or not!).

The rotating header shows original images of the Philippine Islands then and now; "bringing back memories of scenic greens, warm sun, blue waters, great friends and the solace of home..."
